There is No-One What Will Take Care of You is the debut solo album of the (amazing) multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Charlie), in this case going under the name Palace Brothers. Playing on this album are also a few members of the band Slint.

A fragile, warbling voice rises above a field of disconsolate folky/lo-fi/post-rock textures, and century-old sadness washes in the refreshing light of dawn breaking over a high snow-tipped mountain. I found it very glorious to witness, the unfurling of this infinitely intimate album.

Philemon Arthur and the Dung - Musikens Historia Del 1 Och 2

Amazing acoustic lo-fi music from Sweden... I absolutely love the track "Det Femte Hjulet" but there is a melancholy folkiness about their sound I have yet to find in music elsewhere. This is re-released material that was recorded in both 1972 and 1987.

Elevator to Hell - Parts 1-3

I love the album Purple Blue by Eric's Trip (which I might be posting in the near future), and Elevator to Hell was a sort of solo project for Rick White, of Eric's Trip.

Elevator to Hell was a Canadian lo-fi/indie rock project active during the later 90s through the 00s. Parts 1-3 is a combination of the band's first release, a self-titled album, and a mini-LP entitled Part 3. It is absolutely amazing - one of the greatest things I've come across in a while. Every single song is great.

Azalia Snail - Burnt Sienna

Azalia Snail is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. Or at least, that's what Wikipedia says. She has quite an assortment of albums and other releases, but Burnt Sienna is her second full-length. It's really folky and dreamy and nostalgic, like stepping through time into your childhood bedroom to watch yourself sleep. Dream-catchers on the wall, a jar full of bugs on the dresser, drawings on the wall, your favorite blanket and stuffed animals cluttered around your bed. This is, for lack of better words, a very pleasant album.

Puka Puka Brians - Love Warrior

This is the fourth album by Majikick label's Puka Puka Brians, the brainchild of Japanese musician and songwriter Ueno Takashi (or Takashi Ueno), along with the addition of several other members (including his wife). With influences in the likes of Frank Zappa and other experimental rock artists, this is a very unique release. Takashi is also one half of the husband-wife duo Tenniscoats, but there are hardly any similarities between the two bands.



The vocals are hard to describe, and while they are sometimes off-key, sometimes unrecognizable, they are still very well-paired with the music. Using various instruments and nearly no consistent structure, Puka Puka Brians have created a diverse set of tracks varying in style, rhythm, and nearly all else. Love Warrior starts off with "Love Warrior," a really awesome track with a cool riff. I can't think of what else to say right now, but I really enjoyed this.



"... Allegedly, 'puka puka' is Japanese slang for floating, and 'Brians' refers to Brian Jones, the Rolling Stone who drowned."

Henry's Dress - Henry's Dress

"San Francisco’s Henry’s Dress debuted on Slumberland Records with this self-titled, eight-song disc. The songs were recorded at Supersonic Studios in 1993 and 1994. The band’s distortion and heavy use of fuzz pedals are immediately prominent, along with Amy Linton’s relaxed vocals. The haunting and chaotic instrumentation on 'Title Forthcoming' combines with Linton’s distant vocals to create a surreal and dreamy aura."

This is quite the debut. Indulgent yet engaging. Dreamy vocals reminiscent of Lovesliescrushing + pure, noisey fuzziness. "Feathers" is a personal favorite, but Henry's Dress is just a great listen.

The Bran Flakes - I Have Hands

This album is 100% samples. These mashup specialists have created 30 tracks of pre-existing material that never cease to amaze. The most paradoxical of works have been fused together and recontextualized in a fun, amazing way. Some bits and pieces I recognized but many others I didn't... I've never heard anything like The Bran Flakes, but this genre is something I think I shall explore further in the future.

"No other band dares to invite Lawrence Welk, Mr. Rogers, Van Halen, & Strawberry Shortcake to the same party. One track uses Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" at its center, juxtaposes the familiar guitar pluck from Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," and ends with the Osmonds singing about freedom."

Monta - Where Circles Begin

Monta is Tobias Kuhn, a singer-songwriter from Germany. Where Circles Begin is a very lovely album, one that I will not forget. His pleasant, acoustic sound reminds me of both Sondre Lerche and Boduf Songs, but it's actually a great deal prettier. "I'm Sorry" is my favorite song.

Songs of Green Pheasant - Gyllyng Street

This soft, beautiful, perfect album by Songs of Green Pheasant, aka Duncan Sumpner, literally makes me feel at home. His style is likened to those of Devendra Banhart, Múm, and Vetiver, among others... There is such a comfort in the gentle melodies here, the whale-like sounds of the ocean and unearthly picturesque scenes full of sights and smells reminiscent of the woods.. His soft, luxurious vocals add to the whispy atmosphere. Breezy, dream-like and enchanting music emanates from Little Hours. Highly recommended. "A Sketch For Maenporth" is definitely a highlighting track for me - it is exactly the kind of ambience I've been looking for in such a long time.

Supreme Dicks - The Emotional Plague

Supreme Dicks were among the most intriguing followers of the aesthetics that equates "creative" and "primitive". The kind of drunk, dissonant folk music of their debut evolved towards the avant-garde and psychedelia on The Emotional Plague, an ambitious work that resorted to sparse, dilated and warped structures.

What a fucking astounding album. I can't imagine anything more perfect, seriously. It is very lo-fi but has some psychedelic and kraut-rock influences. Some projects that came to mind while I listened to this album were Jandek, Acid Mother's Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Ash Ra, Slint, and even Why? at times. It is very dissonant music. I can't quite describe it as well as I'd like but... it made me think of the color gray. in The Emotional Plague there are infinite shades of gray floating all around. This may seem a limited variety, but for Supreme Dicks, it is enough. Their various styles morph together to create multi-faceted but utterly crushing songs of dissonance and warped otherwordliness.

Le Le is a Dutch lo-fi techno funk/house group featuring Parra, Serge Fabergé of DJVT, and Rimer London (Electro Duo Comtron). This album is a combination of their greatest music, and I suggest getting this to hear the best of Le Le. I really love this album!
